Safety First Training and Support Service provide both qualitative and quantitative fit test methods to comply with CSA Z94.4-02.

Safety first is able to help you assess your respiratory needs and provide you with the training you need to protect the health and safety of your employees.

An employer shall ensure fit testing is done on a respirator prior to use. The definition of a respirator could be a half mask, full face mask or an N-95 mask. Testing should also be completed at minimum every two years or if a different size, model or type of respirator is needed.

 

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative?

Qualitative

The qualitative fit test procedures rely on a subjective sensation (taste, irritation, smell) of the respirator wearer to a particular test agent

Quantitative

The quantitative fit test procedure uses an instrument that samples and measures airborne particulates inside the mask.

What types of industries need to perform fit testing?

Healthcare, construction, painters, mining operations, manufacturers. Any staff that will have to use a respirator to protect them from workplace environment from vapor, gases, particulate, mist, fumes and fiber.

Who can do fit testing?

Qualified personnel who have taken a training course are able to set up and maintain an in house fit test program. Safety First Training provides a train the trainer course onsite for your staff with both practical and theory training.

Hazards of not doing a fit test

If fit testing is not done prior to using a respirator you may not be able to determine a proper seal until it is to late and you have been exposed to the elements. Doing a fit test will ensure that there is no leakage in the mask and will ensure your safety.
